More CD reviews of CD in my collection that I haven't listened to properly.

To amuse myself (and to have something to post, even though I doubt anyone besides [livejournal.com profile] quinara will actually be interested and even then) I have decided to try and get more value out of my CD collection by listening to and reviewing all those CDs I have that are just languishing there unplayed and unloved; who knows there may be some hidden gems just waiting for me to be bothered to find them! After all Spotify managed to get me to engage with a couple of Echo & the Bunnymen albums I didn’t get into the first time round (I missed out on some great songs, what was I doing????), so it could work!

Some words of caution. As my collection leans heavily into Rock/Alternative/Indie these reviews will obviously cover these genres, but there may still be some tentative forays into others. There might also be some embarrassing surprises that will erode my cool a bit (though not as many as there would have been if I had been reviewing my vinyl...). :)

I will try and review a fairly well known* album (er…when I can) and one less so each time. I am not going to review albums I like/liked and know well, nor will I include soundtracks, compilations, greatest hits and live albums (not that I am much of a fan of those). I will also horrifically date myself.

* 'Well known' is a relative term, of course.

Here we go.

I did [livejournal.com profile] quinara's sort of meme thingy.

My last 10 Year's in great music. A track a year.

2013 LINEA ASPERA - SYNAPSE
Their album is my current obssession.

All the way back to 2003... )

Sorry Muse.

I used to love you, but I don't think we can make it work any more. It's not you, it's me (okay, it is you). We are different people now. I'm me and you're fucking Queen. And I have always detested Queen.

I tried to be open minded and ignore your occasional wobbles into 'sounding too much like Queen for my comfort' territory and I was really genuinely pleased you were picked for the Olympic song, but the result just too much for me to deal with, you're making my ears bleed.

I don't understand, you were a great band with a great sound all of your own, why do you feel the need to copy someone else's (dated, overblown and preposterous) sound?

Why?

I hope we can stay friends, but I think this is it from me.

Boggy.

I have been feeling a bit out of it recently, both posting-wise and music -wise, so I have resolved to do something about it.

The thing has got me out of touch with current music is a lack of a conduit for news and new bands. I used to listen to XFM, then I moved and the hill behind me blocks their signal (yes, I know I there's an online stream, but there are other factors that are too long-winded to get into now), then MTV2 disappeared and Adam and Joe aren't on 6 Music anymore, Spotify, while certainly like crack to me in other ways, wasn't getting me into anything new, so I have resolved to look at the NME website every day and listen to their radio station as much as I can. Thus, in the last month I have made tons of discoveries!

I propose then, I will make a weekly post of all the new things I like! (We'll see). These might not be all new songs, but they are new to me, that's what counts, as you will see. I also have no idea with some of them how popular or obscure they are, they could all be number ones for all I know (though I think a few are unsigned/unreleased yet).

First though I have to play catch with my finds for the last month:

Warning, jangly indie-pop and sub-metal noise under the cut )

Hopefully, I will be into something totally different next week.

The Good

The trip into London yesterday went textbook perfect, despite all the protests close to the Royal Albert Hall. In fact I didn't see a single protester the whole time. I was thinking I should have joined the protest, but as I didn't know about it until the day before, it wasn't very practical with my pre-paid parking and my cranky knee.

Editors were great though! I definitely want to see them again. This was all boosted by my unbelievably awesome seat about 3 metres away from the stage (unbelievable because I bought it well over halfway through the sale and even the people next to me were a bit surprised by how close it was - they went and checked the back of the hall to check they were in the right place! The only way I could have been closer would have been if I'd been in the row in front. Wow). That's eye-contact with the bassist distance (not that I really wanted that...). Anyway, great band, great gig, great night out.

And because more people need to experience the awesomeness (film not taken by me btw, I was much nearer than that!):

That's enough squee. Normal service will now resume.

The Bad

It's been awhile, but personal injury never stays a away from me for long. Knackered this morning after the late night, the cat standing on my head at 4am and the clocks going forward, I managed to scrape my arm along the spout of the just boiled kettle. Thus hours of icing my arm and the resulting owness that is still owing me now. :(

ETA: Blisters! Eek!

Ow!

[livejournal.com profile] stultiloquentia apparently started a meme where people comment asked for a letter and then posted their five favourite songs that start with it. I caught a dose of the bug from [livejournal.com profile] quinara, of course. She gave me 'M'.

Over-doing things as usual I did 10! )

Have just been brave and booked a ticket to see Editors at the Albert Hall. Got to go on my own, but thems the breaks and the story of my sorry little life - none of my friends like my stuff.

::is stupidly excited anyway::

Now, I must get on and start worrying about it all going hideously wrong...

[livejournal.com profile] quinara and I invented our own meme, because just the eight songs you can pick for Desert Island Discs would just drive you mad in the end. Although in my case only eight albums would probably drive me insane, as I have hundreds of cd's etc and still never have anything I want to listen to!

Anyway, these are the eight albums I cannot live without in (no particular order):

Dear BBC

Don't you think that if I was the slightest bit interested in the football, that I might actually be, you know, watching it?

This means that if I am watching the Formula 1 or the Glastonbury coverage (which is making me itch to be there) I don't want to know every last detail of what's going on BECAUSE I AM TRYING TO AVOID IT!!! My neighbours shouts are telling me all I don't want to know already thanks.

Please get back to talking about music or stop and go penalties and let me continue to not give a stuff.

Thanks and XXX

The question du jour is do I go and buy that bit of rare vinyl, even though I can never be bothered to connect up my record player anymore?

[livejournal.com profile] gamiila and I met up with [livejournal.com profile] freakspawn and [livejournal.com profile] _mysteria_ for the last day of the Hyde Park Wireless Festival with the primary objective of seeing Depeche Mode (yep, again!).

And I survived! (I had my doubts I would)

I feel like death now though, but compared to how I was expecting to feel, that's pretty good!

I have a slight tan! And a Margarita hangover, but on with the pics (which Photobucket has worked its magic on to make really small, sorry):
